Career Counseling: Assist students in exploring career options, identifying their strengths and interests, and setting career goals. Provide information about internship opportunities, job search strategies, and graduate school options. Admissions Assistance: Guide prospective students through the admissions process, including application requirements, deadlines, and documentation. Review application materials, such as transcripts and essays, and provide feedback to applicants. Orientation Programs: Coordinate and facilitate orientation programs for new students to acquaint them with campus resources, academic policies, and support services. Address questions and concerns from new students and help them transition to college life. Individual Advising Sessions: Conduct one-on-one advising sessions with students to discuss academic progress, career aspirations, and personal development goals. Create individualized academic plans and monitor students' progress towards degree completion. Retention Initiatives: Implement retention strategies to support student success and persistence. Identify at-risk students and intervene early with academic advising and support services. Data Management: Maintain accurate records of student interactions, academic plans, and counseling sessions using student information systems or databases. Compile data on student outcomes, retention rates, and program effectiveness for reporting purposes. Workshops and Presentations: Develop and deliver workshops, presentations, and group advising sessions on topics such as study skills, time management, and academic success strategies. Collaborate with campus partners to offer targeted workshops for specific student populations. Professional Development: Stay informed about trends in higher education, academic advising best practices, and relevant policies and regulations. Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and training sessions to enhance counseling skills and knowledge. Collaboration and Outreach: Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to support student success initiatives and promote academic excellence. Participate in campus events, committees, and task forces related to student retention and academic support. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field is required. Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or Student Affairs is preferred. Experience: Previous experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services in a higher education setting is preferred. Knowledge of academic program requirements, curriculum planning, and student development theories. Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students from diverse backgrounds. Empathy, patience, and active listening skills to support students facing academic or personal challenges. Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to assess student needs, identify barriers to success, and develop appropriate interventions. Ability to make informed decisions and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Computer Proficiency: Proficiency in using computer applications and student information systems for data management and reporting purposes. Familiarity with academic advising software or CRM systems is a plus. Ethical Conduct: Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards in all interactions with students and colleagues. Adherence to the ethical guidelines and standards of professional organizations such as NACADA (National Academic Advising Association). Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage multiple tasks, appointments, and student caseloads effectively. Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to work with students of varying needs and backgrounds, as well as to respond to changing institutional priorities and policies.
