Responsibilities: Patient Care: Assist dentists during dental procedures by handing them instruments, maintaining patient comfort, and providing chair-side support. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations and procedures, ensuring cleanliness and organization. Instrument Sterilization: Sterilize and disinfect dental instruments and equipment according to established protocols. Maintain infection control standards to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for patients and staff. Patient Education: Educate patients on oral hygiene practices, dental procedures, and post-treatment care instructions. Answer patient questions and address concerns to promote oral health awareness and compliance. X-Ray Imaging: Take dental radiographs (X-rays) as directed by the dentist, following safety protocols and positioning techniques. Develop and mount X-ray films for diagnostic purposes. Charting and Records Management: Record patient treatment information, medical histories, and vital signs accurately in patient charts or electronic health records (EHR). Maintain confidentiality of patient records and adhere to HIPAA regulations. Assist in Administrative Tasks: Schedule patient appointments, manage patient billing, and process insurance claims. Handle front desk duties such as answering phones, greeting patients, and managing patient files. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks on dental equipment and instruments. Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to the dentist or office manager. Assist with Laboratory Procedures: Prepare dental impressions, molds, and casts for laboratory processing. Fabricate temporary crowns, bridges, or other dental prosthetics under the direction of the dentist. Supply Management: Monitor inventory levels of dental supplies and materials. Order supplies as needed and ensure adequate stock levels are maintained. Emergency Response: Assist in managing medical emergencies that may arise in the dental office. Follow established emergency protocols and provide support to the dental team as needed. Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Completion of a dental assisting program from an accredited institution is preferred. Certification: Certification or licensure as a dental assistant may be required in some states or jurisdictions. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may also be necessary. Technical Skills: Proficiency in dental assisting techniques, including chair-side assistance, sterilization, and radiography. Familiarity with dental terminology, procedures, and equipment. Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, dentists, and other healthcare professionals. Compassion, empathy, and professionalism in providing patient care. Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks such as charting, instrument sterilization, and record-keeping.
